(Billy Hallowell) -- Former Republican presidential candidate and Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum ripped President Barack Obama on Wednesday during an appearance on the “Scott Hennen Show.” In a moment of candid discussion, the politician lambasted the president‘s handling of situations that involve America’s foes.
“If you’re a thug, you need to just wrap yourself in victimhood and call the United States an oppressor and this president will sympathize with you,” Santorum said.
During the appearance, Santorum also defended presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s responseto the Middle Eastern attacks this week. He pointed to liberals’ past reactions to President George W. Bush during times of war and uncertainty to paint a double-standard of sorts among those criticizing Romney.
“Look at the response of the left to President Bush on a variety of different occassions when we saw actions against civilian and military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said. “What Mitt Romney said is absolutely true.”
Santorum went on to say that Obama and the State Department didn’t “stand up for the values of this country” and that they, once again, showed weakness. Their actions, he said, were akin to “cower[ing]“ to ”radical Islamic terrorists.” Santorum also defended free speech, even when it contains unpleasant messaging.
“We should not be sending out communiques apologizing for what is one of the great things about this country which is our ability to criticize anything in the public square,” he said.
