A 14-year-old boy shot and severely wounded a man breaking into a family home in Laveen on Friday.
Phoenix police say the teen was home with three younger siblings near 55th Ave. and Baseline when the boy heard a knock at the door. He didn't recognize the woman he saw when he looked through the peephole, so he didn't answer.
Moments later, the boy heard a loud pounding on the door. Police say he ushered his three siblings upstairs, where he retrieved his parents' handgun.
The boy walked to the top of the stairs just as a man kicked down the door and aimed a gun at the teen, who fired the handgun at the intruder.
Police say the suspect was hit, and was last reported in critical condition at a Phoenix hospital. He's expected to recover, and will be arrested and booked into jail when he's released from the hospital.
No names have been released.
