TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) – A drug-sniffing dog for the Arizona Department of Public Safety who authorities say was left unattended in a hot squad car for more than an hour has been euthanized.
DPS spokesman Carrick Cook said the Belgian Malinois named Jeg was euthanized Thursday. The dog had been rushed to a veterinary hospital after the incident.
His temperature was extremely high when he was found.
The agency says the officer who left the dog unattended was distraught.
Jeg was left unattended after his partner was switching from one patrol car to another at DPS headquarters in Tucson.
The officer was immediately sent to a rollover crash, but realized on the way that he had left Jeg in the first vehicle.
DPS is conducting an internal investigation, and Tucson Police Dept. has agreed to do a criminal investigation to determine whether there was any negligence or other criminal behavior involved.
